Thanks for the very helpful tips and information guys, after reading up
about this, and your comments, I think Java is a good place for me to
start. I like the idea of creating Android apps, as Enchance mentioned, and
Java seems to be everywhere :). How would one go about creating an Android
Application? I know that would all come later, as learning the script is
the starting point. Can you guys recommend any websites that give a
clear, concise, sum up of the language?

    Thanks

There's a site for beginners called roseindia.net... Also, java2s would be
    a good place to start.

But then again, real learning only comes when you actually start the dirty
work of writing the thing with your bare hands.

As far as Android is concerned, Android.com has a SDK as well as an Eclipse
plugin. Its a little complicated, but once you get it running, there's no
    looking back.

    Best of Luck

    Daniel,

C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, PHP, and a few others are based on C. So, theoretically if you learn one language, you've learned them all - from a syntax point of view.

You are correct that the frameworks do differentiate languages, however, don't let this prevent you from learning the frameworks in general. As I've learned throughout my 30+ years in programming, most frameworks just extend or reinvent a version of something I have already learned.

As for starting places, the LAMP stack and Java are great places to start. Both are free, cross platform compatible, and have a wealth of information that is relevant to todays technology. If you wish to learn C / C++ then load the Linux kernal into a VM and start writing scripts there. You'll also learn a bit about the differences and similarities of Windows, Linux, and Apple. As for C#, if you can find the Microsoft Visual Studio rather inexpensively, then compare the frameworks between C# and Java.

Good luck, and keep extending your knowledge, and asking questions. It's the mark of a good scientist.

    Mike,

    Hi,

I have no idea about programming languages, as of today. But i would like to learn a transferable skill that i am interested in. I believe Java is a very popular programing language, but there are upcoming frameworks at the moment such as .NET. Forgive me if im speaking nonsense. Could you guys give me a heads up on what to learn first, what is simplest, what is most popular, and where is each language going. Is java going down?

    Thanks guys,

Forgive my naivety on this subject.

Well, you could try Flash based.

There's also HTML5. Rumor has it that soon its going to completely replace
    Flash based applications.

Both have their Pros and Cons.

    Regards
