Hi,
I have no idea about programming languages, as of today. But i would like
to learn a transferable skill that i am interested in. I believe Java is a
very popular programing language, but there are upcoming frameworks at the
moment such as .NET. Forgive me if im speaking nonsense. Could you guys
give me a heads up on what to learn first, what is simplest, what is most
popular, and where is each language going. Is java going down?

Learning Java can give Android apps which is big right now. If you want to
go web-based, I'd suggest PHP/MySQL.

Hi,
I suggest you dabble in a few to find the one(s) you like and go from
there. No sense learning something you don't like.
Also, I'd look in your area to see what's in demand. While this shouldn't
be the only factor, I wouldn't learn a certain language if it's not in
demand unless you just want to learn it for fun.
I'm on the MS side and I like it. My company also uses Java and there's
demand for that but I rarely see jobs asking for php experience although
this could be limited to my area.

For web based, use php/mysql. The combination is cool.
Java is cool for stand-alone apps.
It really depends on what you do.
I love php for its flexibility and the large amount of materials
availabe online.
